Sun City Video

The excellent blog Mostly Modern Media offered up some great YouTube treasures on Friday.  While the version of "Down Under" by Men At Work just reminded me how much I miss Pop-Up Video, the real gem of the bunch is Artists Against Apartheid’s video for "Sun City:"

Oh my gosh, what a video.  All political messages aside, in this video we get to see:

Lou Reed with his arm around John Oates;
Daryl Hannah and Jackson Browne singing backing vocals
Bono kissing one of the Fat Boys (holy shit!)
Bruce Springsteen shaking his fist in anger

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, folks.

Nevermind that the majority of these artists probably would not have been invited to play Sun City.

    Oh my god I forgot how much I loved this. Better than Bruce shaking his fist in anger, is Bruce shaking his fist in anger wearing one of the alternate leather jackets from the Beat It video. Can we play this at Waltz?

    I think  out of all the "let’s raise awareness" songs from the 80s, this one was my fav.

    This song really does kick the ass of “We Are the World.” I probably liked the latter more in 1985, but “Sun City” holds up much better. It doesn’t have a self-congratulatory air like other benefit songs.

    Didn’t Queen come under fire in the ’80s for performing at Sun City?
