Back when the Baltimore Orioles were a championship contender, there was a phrase created by a writer called "Oriole Magic" after the '79 Orioles came from behind many times to win games. They went to the World Series that year. The phrase stuck and later in the '80s the team would play You Can Do Magic" after each Orioles win. Good times following that team in the '70's and '80's. Too bad they suck now.

This was back in the day that I knew every song in this list. Liked about half of them, could listen to the other half for nostalgia value. Love the Jonatha Brooke cover. If there were any justice in the world, her song Linger would've been a Top 10 hit.Colin Hay's Beautiful World is a must-download if you don't already have it on the Scrubs soundtrack.

I agree with both you guys about "Somebody's Baby." It's a weak song, and has that same whiff of written-for-money that David Bowie's bad stuff has. But it still always takes me back to the first time I saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and, THAT, I like. The "Let's Dance" album takes me back to 1983, same kind of thing. And Toad's "All I Want," to me, sounds like 1992.

I may be in the minority here, but I think Somebody's Baby is what is called a "stiff" in the radio biz (i.e., it blows). Even though it charted in the top 10, I thought it was one of Browne's least inspired songs (you can put Lawyers in Love in there, too). Your Steve Miller comment had me laughing pretty hard, and the Chicago/Postal Service comparison was spot on. The odd thing is that I was doing a more funky version of "Such Great Heights" last night in a jam session with some friends, so when I read your post this morning, it was one of those synchronicity moments. We had to drop some lyrics to make it fit the tempo (which was much slower) and rhythm (think of Jabo Starks from James Brown's band).

"Somebody's Baby" is a gem.

It's been covered many times but my favorite is by this pop punk band called The Gamits.

I love the Chicago/Cetera/David Foster stuff! One of the best songs from this union was "Stay The Night."

Frankie and Johnnie!Wow, I had no idea "Somebody's Baby" was a bigger hit than "Doctor My Eyes", or even than it was a hit at all. The only Browne hit other than "Doctor My Eyes" that I really like is "Here Come Those Tears Again". And I'd rather hear the Jackson Five's version of "Doctor My Eyes".I can remember that "I Ran" and "Who Can It Be Now" were 1982 because I associate both of them with that period when MTV was making songs into hits that MTV had to play because they didn't have everyone making videos yet; I'm not sure either band would have broken through without MTV (I'm nearly certain Thomas Dolby wouldn't have). Hay wrote several good hits, and they just seemed to keep slipping a little further down the charts with each one. I think "It's a Mistake" is my favorite.

Holy schniekies. You just TOTALLY BUSTED Ben Gibbard!Your mashups are flat brilliant. My only quibble with this post is that any bonus track related to the Alan Parsons Project HAS to be "Sirius" I guess we can do that America song, but why not the real crunchy granola AM gold stuff like Ventura Highway and Sister Goldenhair?

Nice catch with "Such Great Heights" and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry." I remember "Who Could It Be Now?" from the fall of '81 instead of the fall of '82 just as you remember "I Ran" from '84 instead of '82. Strange.
