jefitoblog.com Pwned?
For those of you wondering why Jeff’s site won’t load – it seems like his hosting company nigerianhosting.com jatol.com may have quit the business, leaving a lot of people in the lurch without websites.
Let’s not all lose our shit just yet, but this could be bad.
Jeff is currently investigating the problem, which has a lot of people quite angry at the moment. As you can imagine, rebuilding his blog from scratch is not something he’d be up for doing anytime soon, so things might be a bit quiet on the Jefito front for a little while. I told him he could guest-blog here if he wanted. His response is not fit for print, but I’ll see if I can change his mind.
Stay tuned. I’ll be sharing more information with you as I get it from Jeff.
(On another note, this is the first time I’ve used the word "pwned," so please let me know if I’m using it incorrectly. Thanks.)
September 6th, 2007 at 6:43 pm
Crap! I was wondering what was going on. It would be a shame if Jeff decided to give up his blog. But considering how many hours he spends in front of the computer for work, it would be understandable if he did.
September 6th, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Ah. I pwndered pwhat pwas up over there. Thanks for the update.
(Dumb question – what do you mean by rebuilding his blog? Wouldn’t he just have to upload it onto a new server? Doesn’t his blogging program save the architecture to a local drive, a la iWeb?)
September 6th, 2007 at 9:18 pm
I think "pwned" is always incorrect unless you’re (A) under 20 and (B) attempting to declare victory in an argument you haven’t actually won. American civilization will officially die when someone declares that Giuliani pwned Ron Paul in a debate.
September 6th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
I’m also not a big fan of PWNED… with one exception. There’s a great picture on urbandictionary.com with a kitty cat getting hit with a snowball and that picture really says it all! I love sending that pic to a friend at work who is a Detroit Tigers fan whenever he gets a little cocky (all in good fun, of course!).
September 6th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
GRRRRRRRRRRRR
September 7th, 2007 at 3:55 am
The provider just up & quit on all it’s users ?
Well, they can suck my pwned.
Hope Jeff doesn’t go away.
September 7th, 2007 at 6:03 am
I wish it could be as simple as uploading the blog to a new server. I don’t have a local backup of the blog — it was living on Jatol’s servers, which are apparently in line to be wiped clean, due to the company president’s decision to stop paying his bills.Something could change. I’m not betting on it.
September 7th, 2007 at 6:59 am
So everything you’ve written or posted since 2002 will vanish completely? That’s completely fucking horrible. And if I may take a moment to be selfish, I’m kicking myself for not copying my "Safe for Crackers" write-up from last month for my files; I kept meaning to, after I made all those post-publication changes, but I put it off, thinking "Jefitoblog isn’t going anywhere." I really hope this situation changes, Jeff. Could legal action be taken? I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
September 7th, 2007 at 8:05 am
Wow, Robert. Just think: every time you read your "Safe For Crackers" entry from now on, you’re going to have to read the uncorrected version.
Your head is exploding right now, isn’t it.
September 7th, 2007 at 8:31 am
That last sentence of yours needed a question mark on the end, Jason, but I’m off the clock right now, so let me just say this: I can’t stop wondering if some totally hot chick — you know, like Pia Zadora — read my “Safe for Crackers” entry and thought, That semicolon looks out of place right there. Oh, it kills me! So many corrections still to be made! Will I get the chance? WHO KNOWS?! (I honestly don’t know if I even have a full copy of the uncorrected version — that thing was written for the most part about 16 hours before it went live, while I was at work, because Jeff needed to fill a gap in the prime-time schedule, so to speak.)
Seriously, this Jefitoblog business sucks. Jeff deserves better. The only upshot I can see is that I’ll have less new music to listen to each week if Jefitoblog goes away, but I really hope that’s not the case.
September 7th, 2007 at 8:37 am
Christ on a crutch, this is awful.
September 7th, 2007 at 8:38 am
The period was on purpose. It’s funnier than using a question mark.
September 7th, 2007 at 9:51 am
Who told you that? Carlos Mencia?! (A question mark and an exclamation mark next to each other are funny too. They imply kraziness.)
September 7th, 2007 at 10:38 am
Well as a constant jefito lurker…I can tell you my life will go back to a just a meaningless, chasmic existance without Jefito. Okay that’s not true, but my days will suck just a bit more w/o you Jeff. Screw the past, just start anew and go from there. We’re with you!
September 7th, 2007 at 11:01 am
Just a thought – how about if all us jefito-files trawl through our history pages and email the saved html pages? I also have a lot of the files saved. The bionic website – we can rebuild it!fiftypercenthttp://mineforlife.blogspot.com/
September 7th, 2007 at 11:51 am
Does The Wayback Machine still exist? (I can’t check from work right now.) If so, it might have all the content, or a hell of a lot of it.
September 7th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Geez… I’m another longtime jefito lurker… This blows. (Eloquent, huh?) Jeff, I hope you come back!
September 7th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
The Wayback Machine is still out there. Jason, I usually have trouble making html work in the comments here, so I’ll just give a naked link:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070304101029rn_1/jefitoblog.com/blog/
seems to have links to posts from December 2002 to March 2007. I got that by searching "jefitoblog.com" at web.archive.org. It’s likely that more recent stuff could be found, maybe by searching on subdirectories at jefitoblog. Anyway, the blog’s formatting isn’t there, but a lot of the content is.
September 7th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Christ almighty. This sucks. The reason I found Jason, Py and Vrabel is because of Jeff’s place. I fear he won’t come back. He’s threatened to close up shop before and I fear this may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. What sucks worse for him is that his other blog is gone, too.Sorry, Jeff.
September 7th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
How could I not comment on this? Honestly, I haven’t much to say. What with the sub-prime mortgage industry tanking and thousands of homebuyers suddenly looking at the barrel of foreclosure, Chinese Speak And Spells giving children cancer, melting polar icecaps seen as a "really great thing" to oil companies looking for new places to drill… I’m not all that surprised that an internet server company would take money from subscribers, not pay their own bills and then let it all hang in a shutdown situation. I don’t like it one bit. Jeff and Jason almost willingly allow me to be an ignorami on their sites – hell, sometimes they encourage it, perhaps adding to all that’s wrong with the world instead of counteracting it… My point is that even though I too think it sucks that this should occur, I’m shocked by how not shocked I am. I should also mention that this week’s Chartburn was a classic, easily the funniest snarkfest we’ve ever stumbled through. It would have been bigger than "All Our Base", the dramatic groundhog and Tay Zonday combined. The hits would have been enormous and said server provider could have retired comfortably with a cross-advertising deal with Jefito that surely would have come with that Chartburn’s appearance. But you blew it, Opie Cunningham, so suck it. DwD
September 7th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
And from Wikipedia:
Given the recent development of the word, and its primary use in written form only, there is no single accepted pronunciation of pwn; as w does not typically represent vowels in English, arguments about the "correct" pronunciation occur with relative frequency. Pronunciation is usually determined by personal preference and context. The two most common pronunciations are [oÊŠn] (own, in reference to the original misspelling) and [poÊŠn] (as in pone).
Other variations include:
[pu:n] (as in "harpoon"; W has this sound in cwm and crwth)
[pəʔˈoʊn] (puh-own)
[piˈoʊn] (pee-own)
[pÊŒn] (pun)
[pwin] (pween)
[pÉ”Ën] (pawn)
[paÊŠn] (to rhyme with gown)
[pwəʔˈn̩] (pwuh-nn)
[pwoÊŠn] (pwone)
[pwɪn] (pwin, rhyming with win)
[pəwən] (puh-wun)
[piË dÊŒbÉ™lju É›n], pronouncing each letter separately

Hmm. I’m way in the dark as to these matters, but … I was cruising the forums over at webhostingtalk and came across this comment, posted today at 10:30 a.m.:
“Well… good news!
“After a lot of yelling, crying and tantrum throwing by Jatol’s customers, FastServers put the servers back online for everyone to be able to get to their backup files. I can just imagine how many frantic people were madly downloading files tonight. I am sure their was a lot of heartburn medicine being consumed. I know I obliged in some myself!
“I feel ever so sorry for those who are hosted with Jatol and have no idea what is going on, or for those who have already moved and do not know they can access their files now.”
For what it’s worth.
September 7th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
Jefito’s is my favorite blog, period. (No offense, Jason.) Assuming Jeff can get his files back and is willing to repost somewhere else, I’d be honored to contribute some $$$ toward getting him started at a new host. If someone will post info on how to do that, I’ll be back with PayPal or a credit card tonight.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:04 am
Just having recently stumbled upon Jeff’s blog, I too hope to see him up and running again soon. I’ve really come to appreciate the content and wish I’d found it sooner.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Jefito is easily the greatest blog out there. I think starting from scratch would be fine.
September 10th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Anything I can do to help out here, let me know. Up to and including getting a flaming torch and storming something. There’s no justice like angry mob justice.
September 10th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Don’t give up Jeff!
September 11th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
I’m another longterm lurker at jefito. Please don’t give up, Jeff! Yours is my favorite music blog.
September 11th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Any progress on the Jatol.com front? Those Webhostingtalk.com message boards don’t seem to indicate any positive progress. For those who are interested, you can see the last month or so of posts at this address. I wish I had printed out that Minnie Riperton Idiot’s Guide and many others for future reading, but like I said before, I thought I had plenty of time. But time was not on my side. And Tim Tooley isn’t on anyone’s side. (Fucker.)
September 12th, 2007 at 9:27 am
Jeff,
I would also like to say that your blog is my favorite, and is by far the best blog out there. If there’s anything I can do to help – be it a donation for new web space or whatever . . . let me know!

If there’s a specific entry from Jefito you’re looking for, just Google it and access the "Cached" version instead. For example, Robert lamented not printing the Minnie Riperton guide… here it is:
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:RkUGbnGBhJgJ:jefitoblog.com/blog/%3Fp%3D1245+Minnie+Riperton+jefito+blogurl:http://jefitoblog.com/blog&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=news…am I stating the obvious…?

I think Jeff should start the blog from scratch and continue bringing pleasure to people with his writing.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
I humbly submit that Jeff and Jason join forces, divvy up the work, and rely on a growing cadre of eager submitters to build J-blog v. 2.0.
Jeff could be the editor and do whatever features he pleased, Jason could do Mellow Gold and post McD. pictures, and the rest of us could kick in other flotsam on a regular basis to help them build the bestest blog ever. It’d be like Voltron!
It’s kinda the model set up already with Chartburn and the last few months of Guides, plus a few Chart Attacks …
Just a thought.
September 12th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
As much as I would dearly love to get to click over to jefitoblog every day, Jeff has clearly put in a tremendous amount of time and energy into the site over the years. I’d like to say this:
Jeff, if you should decide that this is the time to retire the blog permanently, you have every right to do that. We’ve benefitted for a long time, and you don’t owe your readers anything at all. I can only speak for myself, of course, and I hope that you keep writing as a part of things like Chartburn, but if you need a breather or a permanent break from the music blogging scene, you should take it. I’m pretty sure that we won’t love you any less.
Thank you so much for the entertainment, the point of view, and all of the music. I’m very glad that I ran across your site. It’s been a privilege to tag along on your musical journey for a while.
Peggy
September 12th, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Thanks for the tip about cached posts, Luc! Somebody mentioned that before, but I wasn’t really sure what they meant (I think I did click on "cache" but the page took forever to load without me realizing it was loading).
Peggy, I like what you said. Very eloquently put.
September 13th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
I hope you get up and running again Jeff. I will gladly donate money to your site if you do (it’s the only blog I would pay to keep going). In the meantime I will have to be content with the pics of you and your buddies burning ants at Boy Scout Camp.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Jefitoblog bestrode the music blog world like a mighty colossus and this server bullshit sucks ass. I hope he comes back to the Internet even though it bit him.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
There’s an old joke (I honestly don’t remember the first part of it) with the punchline, “Jesus saves.” It was a computer joke referring to backing up your computer work. No offense Jefito, but I thought after the Great Hard Drive Failure of ’06 you would have backed up the website.
But I should talk. I have loads of music on my computer un-archived.
Let this be a lesson to us all.
Still, the important thing is the music. There is no one who can fill Jefito’s shoes. Period. So archive or no archive, I hope he will continue the fight. Jefitoblog is dead. Long live Jefitoblog!
September 16th, 2007 at 10:19 am
jefitoblog has been both entertaining and inspiring to me. Jeff, if you’re reading and you need any help, let me know!
September 17th, 2007 at 1:39 am
Just to chime in and say that I only discovered jefitoblog a few months back and would be very sorry to see it go. That there was some quality stuff- words and music. But I’ll also concur with Peggy: You don’t owe us anything Jeff; if anything we owe you. So many of the blogs I look at lately seem to have turned from labors of love into whomping headaches for the bloggers. If I had the discipline to have written that much over the years, I’d be shooting my toes off one by one thinking that it was all about to be wiped clean without a second thought. But the future lives. Good luck and thanks, Jeff.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:37 am
I’ve been reading Jefitoblog for a couple of years now and I check it daily. It would be a damn shame if the SOB’s took Jeff out for good. There are a trillion music blogs on the interwebs but none of them are as well written with such humor and love of music (both good and bad) as Jeffito. Whatever I can do to help, let me know.
September 18th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
See Jeff? See how much you’re loved and missed? You know there’s a whole statistics thing about how every response like these actually represent so many more…blah, blah, blah. My point is….these almost 4 dozen responses here just represent a fraction of your blog loving audience who a) knew to come here, b) bothered to write and c) aren’t currently incarcerated (yes…OJ was a big Jefito fan…). So do the math and see that you’re needed back on the blog scene. Not relegated to some monthly, cameo post on friends’ blogs bullshit…but back in your own space.
Plus it’s sickening me to wait for the other shoe to drop…do we even get a hint of what your future plans might be? Post a list of what you need and let the troops rally! And would it helped if I begged? And thanks again….
September 20th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Something’s coming, CG. Keep your eye on Jason’s site for an announcement sometime in the next week!
September 20th, 2007 at 10:24 am
Yay!
September 22nd, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Just found this entry when doing a Google search on jefitoblog to figure out what happened to the site. When I was attempting to access the site last week, I was hoping there was something wrong with my browser. Jeff, if your site does return, I think the first post should include a link to "Tubthumpin’" cause you keep getting knocked down, but you get up again.
September 23rd, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Woo-hoo….my pointless existence possibly has meaning again!!! :P
September 27th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Hopefully good news is forthcoming. Sorry to hear about all the hosting bullshit. : (
