The Universe is Laughing

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Jessica and I have been singing together pretty much since the first day we met, but it took us a long time to figure out how to do it properly. Something about our blend never sounded quite right. One day, we were in the car singing through Rites of Passage by Indigo Girls, and when we got to “Jonas and Ezekial” I think I was drinking some water or something and she got to the lead part — the Amy Ray part, the part I should be singing! — before I did. So I sang Emily Saliers’ part instead, which goes into the stratosphere near the end. I blew out my voice, but it actually sounded okay.

And that’s when we figured out the secret to us singing together: she needs to take the low part. It makes sense. Telemarketers call her “sir” and me “ma’am” when they get us on the phone. She’s got a deep voice, I sound kind of like the pimply-faced kid on The Simpsons. She fixes stuff in the house when it breaks, I suggest calling someone and paying them too much money to do it. She wears the pants, I look good in a dress. (Not that I do that sort of thing (regularly), but c’mon. These legs? Please.)

The other night we took a stab at singing one of our favorite songs, “The Universe is Laughing,” by one of our favorite bands, The Guggenheim Grotto. Not too shabby. I like singing the high part more anyway.

Doin’ The Math

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Just taking a look at my upcoming week between now and next Monday.  4 rehearsals + 4 auditions + 3 performances + that annoying "full-time job" thing = a quiet week or two on the website front, for the most part.  I’ll be back as soon as possible.  (And yes, I do expect to get shit from Jeff for this.)

However, good news: our buddy Beau – he of Mostly Modern Media, the excellent blog that’s been showing us how it’s done for a good two years now – is going to take over CHART ATTACK! this week, so you can expect yet another Friday full of ’70s goodness.  (I’ll be doing some more outsourcing of CHART ATTACK! in future months, so those of you who have offered to cover a week, don’t worry – I’ll be in touch.)

And hey, if you’re in the area, don’t forget that Mike and I are rocking the shit out of the ’80s this Saturday, September 8th.  Rehearsals are going great; the only challenge is getting through each song without cracking up.  It’ll be a fun night!

The Return of Acoustic ’80s!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Michael and I will be returning to Waltz-Astoria on Saturday, September 8th for another evening of cheesy ’80s music.  All the favorites from last time, including new ones by…well, it’s a surprise.  But definitely a Hall & Oates song with a melodica solo.  (I’m working my way through your book, Velma!)

All information can be found on my performance page – you can even vote for songs that should return to the set!

Evil Prince Ludwig Returns!

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

EVIL PRINCE LUDWIG THE INDESTRUCTIBLE played another fantastic (if I do say so myself) gig at The Bitter End on Friday, June 15th.  Thanks so much to everyone who came out, and thanks to Jessica, who ran around sitting on strangers’ laps so she could take a zillion photos.  Here are some of the best pics; full album available here.

This one, I think, is my favorite.  This is me singing the really high "YEAH" at the end of "Sister Christian," and Mike losing his shit.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from our gig at The Bitter End on Friday.  Full album can be found here.  Thanks to everybody who came!  (And special thanks to Jess, who was on camera duty the entire night.)
